The Opportunity

Capital City Chorus is seeking an inspiring and skilled Music Director to lead the musical growth, artistic direction, and performance excellence of the chorus. The successful candidate will be a strong musical educator, an effective leader of volunteers, and a passionate advocate for barbershop harmony.

This role is ideal for a collaborative, forward-thinking director who enjoys building vocal technique, ensemble cohesion, and musical confidence while balancing artistry with fun and fellowship.

 


Key Responsibilities

Musical Leadership

  • Plan and lead weekly rehearsals that are engaging, educational, and efficient
  • Develop and maintain high standards of vocal production, blend, balance, tuning, and musicality
  • Select and prepare repertoire aligned with chorus goals, abilities, and performance commitments
  • Direct the chorus in concerts, community performances, and competitions as applicable
  • Encourage and support quartet singing and small-group development within the chorus

Education & Development

  • Teach barbershop style, performance skills, and vocal technique in an accessible and motivating way
  • Provide musical coaching and feedback to individuals, sections, quartets, and the full ensemble
  • Work with section leaders to reinforce musical and vocal objectives
  • Support ongoing musical education, including workshops, clinics, and guest coaching when appropriate
  • Accept and adpot external coaching to advace the skills of the chorus and themselves

Collaboration & Administration

  • Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors, Assistant/Associate Directors, and chorus leadership team
  • Participate in artistic planning and goal setting
  • Communicate musical expectations clearly and positively
  • Assist in member retention and recruitment through engaging rehearsals and guest experiences
  • Contribute to a safe, respectful, and inclusive rehearsal environment

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Strong musicianship, including conducting and vocal pedagogy skills
  • Experience directing choirs or vocal ensembles
  • Ability to teach music effectively to adult amateur singers
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Reliability and strong organizational skills
     

Preferred

  • Experience in barbershop harmony or close-harmony a cappella styles
  • Familiarity with Barbershop Harmony Society musical standards and practices
  • Experience preparing ensembles for performance and/or competition
  • Experience working with volunteer arts organizations

Time Commitment

  • Weekly rehearsals (typically one evening per week)
  • Additional time for performances, coaching, planning meetings, and special events as required

Compensation

This is a paid, contract position. Compensation will be negotiated based on experience, qualifications, and scope of responsibilities.
